Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has strengthened its position in the global artificial intelligence market with a major technology deal with German luxury automaker Porsche as the deal is in place.
The deal also extends a longer-term AI services deal for TCS to buy a consulting firm from Porsche’s MHP.
The five-year agreement is worth $1.46 billion and is expected to integrate artificial intelligence at the heart of Porsche’s automotive business. TCS will be involved in vehicle engineering, manufacturing, operations and customer-facing services with the automaker.
The agreement comes as global carmakers turn to software, data and artificial intelligence.
The current technology-driven production of vehicles and manufacturing systems and the digital technology in the car market is increasingly technology-based, so IT companies have new opportunities for digital and AI solutions.
TCS and Porsche will collaborate on an ‘AI Mobility Centre of Excellence’ through this collaboration.
The centre will help the development and implementation of AI applications in the automotive industry as well as wider use of them. It could potentially involve everything from the engineering process and factory operations to customer experience.
The second big part of the announcement is MHP Management- und IT-Beratung GmbH. TCS will purchase the Porsche business for about $373 million. The transaction is still subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.
MHP is primarily known for its management and technology consulting services for automotive and industrial companies.
Digital transformation, manufacturing technology, artificial intelligence, enterprise systems and supply-chain solutions are all part of its capabilities.
TCS's acquisition will allow TCS to expand its European operations and gain access to specialized automotive expertise. MHP has more than 4,500 employees worldwide and has already had a big presence in Germany and around the world.
With the new acquisition, MHP will continue to use its established brand and services as a consulting business within the TCS group. Porsche will also remain with MHP in relation to the existing business relationship.
The deal could prove to be a crucial step in TCS’s strategy to grow its AI business. TCS’s AI-centric strategy will be a significant part of the deal.
Porsche is a partner because it is trying to get the best out of its system and digital transformation at the same time. TCS’ technology capabilities will help Porsche to develop AI-based solutions at various stages of its business.
The agreement is part of a bigger industry trend in the global automobile industry. As car manufacturers are increasingly collaborating with technology firms, cars, factories and customer services are increasingly software-based.
