IIFL Finance Share Price Falls Over 8% After ₹963 Crore Tax Demand

IIFL Finance shares fell in early trading following the company’s home finance subsidiary, IIFL Home Finance, receiving a demand of ₹963.39 crore in tax from the Income Tax authority on Tuesday.

IIFL Finance opened at nearly ₹667 per share on the NSE and closed at ₹696.40. The stock fell to about ₹643.55, down more than 8%. It recovered a bit and was around ₹675.90 at the close of the day.

The quick decline in share prices is indicative of investor worries about the size of the tax demand and its financial implications for the company. IIFL Home Finance has disputed the assessment and said there are very strong factual and legal grounds to oppose the tax demand.

₹963.39 Crore Tax Demand

According to the company's disclosure, the tax demand is for a block assessment for the period April 1, 2018, to February 3, 2025. IIFL Home Finance received the assessment order on August 24, 2026.

The company has maintained that several aspects of the tax assessment are subject to dispute. It has also said that some income related to overriding commission and interest strip assets had already been offered for taxation.

The company also said the corresponding tax credit had not been fully considered while determining the demand.

Company will challenge the assessment

IIFL Home Finance has said it will pursue the legal and administrative remedies under the Income Tax Act.

The company also has challenged the tax authority's interpretation of general reserves in determining the applicable limit under the tax law. It also disputes the treatment of expenses related to employee stock option plans (ESOPs).

IIFL Home Finance said it is pursuing appellate, rectification, and other remedies to contest the assessment order.

Importantly, the company doesn’t expect the matter to have a material impact on its financial position or operations at this time, it said.

Management does not currently see the tax demand as an immediate threat to the company's ongoing business activities, although the final outcome will depend on the appellate and legal proceedings.

Earlier ₹475.56 Crore Demand Also Under Dispute

The latest tax demand is not the only tax-related matter involving the company.

IIFL Finance said the Income Tax Authority has also granted a stay on recovery of an earlier ₹475.56 crore demand, subject to the company paying 5% of the disputed amount, or ₹23.78 crore.

The company has already paid the first instalment of ₹5 crore under the arrangement.

The result means investors will definitely keep paying attention to the company’s disclosures of both tax matters, as well as to the status of appeals and the amount it will pay.

Stock has given strong returns

Despite Tuesday’s plummeting performance, IIFL Finance is performing well over a longer time.

The stock is more than 17 percent higher in the past month and more than 42 percent higher over the last year, according to the company market update.

Until the stock dropped on Tuesday, the stock had been gaining on the stock market, and there was strong investor interest in the financial services company.

Following the recent movements, the stock was trading at a price-to-earnings multiple of about 13.13 times, and market capitalisation of about ₹28,691.95 crore.

Investors watch tax dispute and financial impact

The market’s response to a big regulatory or tax-related disclosure shows how investors can react sharply to huge regulatory or tax-related disclosures, even if companies argue that they have strong grounds to challenge them.

For IIFL Finance investors, the key factors to watch will be the progress of IIFL Home Finance’s appeals, the eventual resolution of the ₹963.39 crore demand, the treatment of the earlier ₹475.56 crore demand, and any possible cash-flow implications.

The company’s own statement that it does not expect any material impact on its financial position or operations might provide some reassurance. But the size of the tax assessment means that the issue is likely to remain an overhang for the stock until it becomes clear.

For now, the sharp decline in IIFL Finance shares reflects the market’s initial reaction to the tax disclosure, while the company’s legal battle will determine whether the reported demand eventually becomes a significant financial liability.
